Samsung wants to compete in the smartphone market alongside the big players and they’ve created a brand new operating system to do so. They call it Bada (which means ocean in Korean) and they’ve put it on the Samsung Wave S8500, which looks similar to other big-screen smartphones. It’s a simple but sexy design and it’s one smart step in their stated mission to create a phone for everyone. At least they’re aiming high. The screen measures 3.3 inches high and features the AMOLED technology to keep the image bright and the reflection to a minimum.

The touchscreen interface uses TouchWis 3.0, an advancement of Samsung’s previous touchscreen software. It works well with no lag whatsoever so it has to be considered a success. The excellent performance also has something to do with the 1GHz processor they have running inside it. When you’re in your phonebook looking at contacts you’ll be delighted to see that you can link people to their IM accounts and their social network accounts. It’s a logical advancement but it’s still really handy.

The multimedia functions of the Samsung Wave S8500 are the best reason to pick it up. The 5 megapixel camera takes crystal clear, gorgeous pictures with vibrant colors. They display at 1280x720 too so they look great. You can also record 720p HD videos. From your phone! You can also play music and videos on your phone and they look fantastic. Several different formats are permitted and in high definition they look crystal clear. The AMOLED screen ensures that the images are sparkling. Playing music is incredibly easy and the interface is sleek and simple. You can organize your songs and albums in a variety of ways and they’re all easy to get to. The sound is fantastic too. It’s unclear at this point how strong the collection of apps for the phone will be so it’s hard to make a final judgment. Everything else is in place for it to be excellent though so it shouldn’t be hard to make this a brilliant and worthwhile device.
