Description
In 1968 two students, Brian May and Tim Staffel, from London made up their minds to form a group. Brian posted on an announcement board in their "Imperial" college a note saying that a drummer "like Ginger Baker" wanted. Soon Brian received an acceptance from young student who studied medicine, Roger Meddows Tailor. The latter became a drummer of the group that was named SMILE. In 1969 "Smile" concluded a contract with Mercury Records and started working in sound recording studio Trident. Soon Tim Staffel presented to the group Freddie Bulsar, his college mate. Freddy became their ardent admirer. Unfortunately, in 1970 "Smile" concluded that they would not succeed. Tim left the group and joined Humpy Bong. Then Freddie abandoned his group "Wreckage" and joined Brian and Roger. This was the beginning of their career. Freddie changed his surname to Mercury and the name of the group to "Queen". After the group changed three bassists, it finally found John Deacon. On February, 1971, he became the fourth member of the group. They constantly rehearsed and took part in several small concerts for close friends in "Imperial" college, the place where the group rehearsed. Then they had a chance to try a new sound recording studio "De Lane Lea". As a reward for testing new equipment, the group was allowed to make trial records for itself. And of course "Queen" didn't miss this chance. In 1972, the group signed a contract with Trident to make records, publish and manage. That year each of members received only 60 pounds per week. When the studio "Trident" was unoccupied "Queen" could work over its first album. In 1973, "Trident" company signed an agreement about "Queen" with EMI. In July of that year the group issued its first album that was named "Queen". They offered the group to take a big break in its recording activity and the group left for its first guest tour to support "Mott the Hoople" group. The tour began in Leeds in November 1973. Most of people at that time assumed that Queen was much more than just a backup team. Finally, in March 1974, the group issued its second album named "Queen II". It should have been issued earlier but on the cover there was a misprint and Queen wanted this misprint to be corrected. The group started its first tour by the cities of Great Britain in March 1974 in Black Pool. In April 1974 the group received an invitation from "Mott the Hoople" to support it during the latter's tour in America. This was "Queen's" first trip to this country. In May Brian fell ill with hepatitis and the group had to cancel the rest of its concerts. The third album was created without Brian. The group received a great assistance from Roy Thomas Baker. At last, Brian became feeling better enough to record the guitar play in studio. But he was still not healthy enough and spent the breaks between the work in studio's bathroom, because he felt himself very weak. Finally, the album was recorded. "Sheer Heart Attack" was released in November 1974. The album was a great success on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and the World started to realize that "Queen" was a power one should take into consideration.
