Description

The Nokia E71 is loaded with serious features that should have Blackberry shaking in their boots. This is as heavy hitter from Nokia that meets all the standards of a Blackberry and even exceeds some. Nokia is ready to go to war with this unit! The E71 has push email, attachment editing, web browsing, 3.2 megapixel camera, media player, support for 3G network and a Wifi connection and that's just scratching the surface.

For the suit and tie crowd it really only comes down to two phone choices. There is the Blackberry Bold and now the Nokia E71. Nokia quietly improves the E -series phones to become more and more user friendly and powerful and is ready to make a splash against its Blackberry competition. This is real mobile office connectivity and usability on display with this unit.

On first glance the shiny silver E71 gleams of power. The phone is equipped with aa full and usable QWERTY keypad that keeps the numbert buttons in the center. To keep you navigating quickly on this phone there are special buttons that take you to your favorite features such as : home, calendar, contacts and email. This should prove handy for any serious corporate user. The E71 has a special "NaviKey" that is much like a mouse pad on a laptop which makes moving about your screen quick and easy. There is software in place to help with all your text input which should help you get those emails and reports off in a hurry. And with its thin 10mm design it feels quite nice in your hands as you push the keys.

To complement the easy to use keypad Nokia supplied the E71 with a 2.36 inch screen with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 16million colors. That should keep you happy when you are reviewing documents or surfing web pages from the phone. The phone is also usable hands should you be on the go. It comes with a handsspeaker and Bluetooth headset connection that can be set to auto answer should you chose.

Since this phone is all about staying connected and able to message anyone and anywhere the phone is set up for both text messaging and push emails. You can connect to email via: IMAP, POP or SMTP email protocols as well as Nokias Intellisync Wireless Email system. You can even view email attachments on the phone with the Quickoffice application allowing you to view Word, Excel and Powerpoint document types. The E71 is not quite there yet with Blackberry on these features but the email system is user friendly and usable too. To keep your phone safe there is a keypad lock, remote lock, and even a encryption key if needed. You can aslo connect to your office via the VPN connection.

All work and no playt make for a long day. This phone lets you play in style. The 3.2 megapixel with autofocus and flash will keep you taking pics to your hearts content and you can record 640 x 480 pixel videos too. The secondary front facing camera is there for video calling which when added all up beats the Blackberry camera and video features. The music player is upto speed too playing all of the common music formats such as MP3, AAC and WMA.

Naturally a phone like this includes a built-in GPS locater and a excellent web browser. The web browser supports a multitude of languages such as XHTML, Javascript, stylesheets and Flash, which shows your webpages just like on your regular computer. The NaviKey lets you zoom in on webpages much like the iPhone web browser does. The phone lets you connect via just about anything out there like: Bluetooth 2.0, USB, WLAN and even infrared.

Suprisingky the battery life is pretty good on this phone unless you are on teh Wifi connection in which case you should keep that charger handy. Make sure to turn this off when not in use or your battery will drain quickly. The phone only comes with 100Mb of internally memory which is far less than the 1GB that is supplied with the Blackberry Bold but its is upgradable to 8Gb via a memory Card.

So which unit trumps the other? Depends on what you want. The E71 has a better camera and more bells and whistles. It handles email and application viewing quite nicely but the Blackberry Bold is just a little bit better in the use of the mobile office. The Bold is a bit more powerful and slighly easier to use so the choice is ulimatley yours and you cant really go wrong here.
