 A cool new smartphone from Nokia, and this time they made it a flip-phone! The new 6650 Fold is has some really neat features such as USB modem, GPS, music player, FM Radio and a nice battery life. The downside of this thing is that its still new so its price tag is still up there.
The 6650 fold as the Nokia 6650 tends to be called is a unique phone for sure. If you remember 2003 then you will remember that Nokia had the 6650, it was the first 3G phone by Nokia and the thing was like a tank. Now the 6650 fold is a rare clamshell design for a smartphone and its only available through T-Moblie.
The phone has a nice look to it sporting a dark metallic finish on the outside. It is a flip-phone but its not the slimmest flip phone out there but it feels right in your hand. They keypad is just about right with decent keys that are back light in a choice of 7 different colors.
While the 6650 fold is loaded with features and is a smart phone the reality is that its a entry level smartphone so its doesn't have the latest tech gadgets. The camera jumps out as true eveidence of this fact being only a 2 megapixel camera that is found in other Nokia budget and entry level phones. It doesn't come with autofocus but does include a flash. The phone connects to the 3G network and supports videos but not video calls.
The music player in this thing has MP3 and RealPlayer to play all the latest vids. The MP3 player supports all the essential file types including MP3, AAC, and WMA. If you forgot to load your latest fave track you can always use the built-in FM radio to get yor tune fix. And to keep you listening in style the phone has a a nice set of head phones in the kit.
At heart this phone is a 3G smartphone so its bound to be loaded with the latest smartphone applications. Starting with a a flash player for the best possible internet surfing that T-Mobile is really pushing. One of the coolest features this phone has is the built in USB modem. This modem allows you to plugin the phone into your laptop and use it as a high speed internet connection. This feature is amazing you want to use your phone for everything including your high speed line for you computer. The HSDPA connection supports upto 3.6Mbps download speeds and all cables are included in the box.
The nice folks at Nokia also included a built-in GPS receiver in the 6650 and 6 months of voice guided navigation when you get your phone. Just so you know you need to have the web'n'walk calling plan to use this feature otherwise they ding you for the cost of downloading the needed maps on your 3G connection.
In summary the 6650 fold is a pretty decent phone that is given away with any of the higher priced monthly plans and that where it should really sit. The lack of decent camera and video calling really put a bad mark on this unit but it does get some points back with the GPS and USB modem. The best call is to wait a short while as the launch prices fall and then pick up this unit as it settles in a more reasonable price range.
