The Nokia 1606 is a cell phone for those that just need to make calls. It’s a basic clamshell design with few extra features but it gets the job done for the most basic of cellular tasks. The price tag is $80 but that’s without a service contract so you don’t have to make any sort of commitment to get your hands on the device.
The 1606 comes with a built-in flashlight that you can use at any time, even when the phone is off. Reception is good but voices often sound distorted and fuzzy when coming to your ear. The screen is 1.8 inches tall and the colors are vibrant and crisp. You get 3.5 hours of talk time between charges. They keys are spaced far apart on the pad so you won’t have any overlap or number mistakes. It’s a membrane-type keypad though so it’s not nearly as nice as those where the keys are actually separate parts.
The limited features the phone has include a voice dialer, a basic WAP web browser and a voice recorder. However, if you’re looking to browse the web with your phone then the Nokia 1606 is not the one for you. It’s difficult because the screen is so small and the browser is so basic that simple tasks can be frustrating. There are only 8mb of onboard memory as well so any voice recording is going to be limited.
The Nokia 1606 is all about the basics. It’s ideal for making calls and receiving calls if you don’t want to commit to a contract with a provider. You can buy the phone and then choose your cell service however you want. The lack of email and IM support, the lack of Bluetooth and the small amount of onboard memory are all knocks against the phone.
