Description

This was, perhaps, the most famous metallic group of the end of 80s and 90s that was founded in 1981 in California (USA) by Lars Ulrich (born 26 December 1963, Copenhagen, Denmark, drums) and James Hetfield (born 3 August 1963, USA, guitar, vocals). They recorded their first demo "No life Til' Leather" together with guitar player Lloyd Grand. In January 1982 Grand was changed by David Mustaine (born 13 September 1961, La Mesa, USA). However, his relations with Ulrich and Hetfield were tense. For short period of time the group had Jeff Warner (guitar) and Ron McGovney (bass) as its members.

At the end of 1982 "Metallica" obtained Clifford Lee Burton (born 10 February 1962, USA, died 27 September 1986; bass, ex-"Trauma"), who played his first concert with the group on the 5th of March, 1983. Mastein left the group and formed his own group "Megadeth". He was substituted by Kirk Hammett (born 18 November 1962, San Francisco, USA; guitar). Hammett had attracted the attention of Ulrich and Hetfield when he was yet playing for "Exodus". He played his first concert with "Metallica" on the 16th of April 1986. The group was performing in such a team till 27th of September 1986. On that day the bus that drove "Metallica", while they were traveling in their guest tour in Sweden, got to the accident. As a result of this accident Cliff Burton died.

At that time "Metallica" participated in European tour along with groups "Raven" and "Venom" that performed British Heavy Metal. Although "Ride The Lightning" was a nice album (especially, "For whom the bell Tolls"), the musicians wanted to create something epic. This became obvious in their disk "Master of Puppets" that was released in 1986. This is their first album on "Elektra Records" that turned a many-sided collection of violent and simultaneously elegiac compositions. After Burton's death the rest of the members recruited a new member, Jason Newsted (born 4 March 1963; bass) that was performing for "Flotsam And Jetsam". The first concert of group with Newsted was performed on the 8th of November 1986. However, the main and directing power of the group still was the duo Ulrich-Hetfield.
