Description
After the death of the Patriarch of Rome a number of strange crimes occur. After the launch of Large Hadron Collider one of the scientists was killed in CERN and a container with antimatter was stolen. Four cardinals, candidates to the position of the Patriarch of Rome, were abducted in Rome. A menace letter from strange illuminati came to the headquarters of Swiss Guard. CERN asks Robert Langdon to discover the murder, and Rome Catholic Church refers to CERN, because there was a stamp of the laboratory.
Langdon was convinced that the target of the criminal society should be searched for in Vatican. He got in touch with Swiss Guard that had to secure Pontifex??™s safety. During the trip to Vatican he was accompanied by Vittoria, an adoptive daughter of deceased professor. She should have changed the accumulator in the container with antimatter. Otherwise, in 24 hours accumulator would discharge and a super powerful outburst would take place. The throne of Pope was in the Sede Vacante state and the conclave sitting in the Cappella Sistina should have called the name of the new prior of Catholic Church. The problem was in that four of the candidates to the throne were abducted.
Langdon was sure that illuminati abducted the candidates. He suspected that the stolen container and cardinals were located in the place of secret meetings of illuminati. In the ancient times those who had wanted to become the member of this society had to find the way to this place with the help of keys left by illuminati in four corners of Rome altogether forming the tips of cross. With the help of a single copy of Galileo (they say he was illuminati as well) works that was saved in the archives of Vatican, Langdon gradually managed to find the names of the searched churches. The solution was in the great Bernini??™s works, supposedly one of illuminati. In each tip of the cross Langdon found the body of one of the abducted cardinals. Each cardinal had an ambigram of one of the primary elements on his chest burned with red-hot iron.
One of the cardinals was found buried alive with his mouth full with Earth. On his chest an ambigram representing Earth was found. Another cardinal was found agonizing with his lungs being pierced. The ambigram on his chest said ???Air???. In the church Santa Maria della Vittoria Langdon met with killer hired by illuminati. The killer was hanging the third cardinal over the fire and the ambigram on the cardinal chest had the sign ???Fire???. During firefight the policeman accompanying Langton died, Vittoria was made a hostage, but Langton managed to hide. The fourth cardinal was found when a killer was trying to sink the bound cardinal in fountain of four rivers. The cardinal had ambigram saying ???water??? burned on his chest. Langdon attempted to rescue the cardinal and managed to do this. Later the cardinal became the Pop.
Finally, Langdon came to the place of supposed meetings of illuminati, the castle of Saint Angel. He entered the castle and kills the killer. Then it was found out that camerlengo, a priest managing Vatican during the period of private meeting with Kohler. This enforced the suspicion that namely Kohler headed the conspiracy of illuminati. When camerlengo shouted the door to the room was broken and Kohler died in firefight. Kohler managed to give video film to Langton prior to be killed.
Meanwhile only several minutes left till the moment when the antimatter will burst up. And the police began to evacuate cardinals out of Vatican. Camerlengo saw a dream when coming out of the Cathedral and ran to the cemetery of Saint Peter where he found the container with antimatter. Finding the container five minutes before it burst up camerlengo and Langdon sat on the helicopter and direct it upwards. The outburst took place on the towering height and therefore it was harmless to the residents of Rome. The parachute of camerlengo that rescued the city landed on the top of the Saint Peter Cathedral and camerlengo was greeted by crowds of thankful people. Cardinals in the gush of emotions were going to select camerlengo as the new Patriarch of Rome.
Meantime Langdon that survived by a miracle landed on the Tiberina Island. He collected cardinals and showed them the film that he received from Kohler. The film revealed who was really responsible for all committed crimes. During the meeting with the father of Vittory relating the experiments to obtain antimatter the deceased Pop approved the experiments because namely the science let him have a son. Basing on this these words Camerlengo suggested that Pop had committed offense with a woman once and thus broke a Celibacy vow and therefore was not dignified to live. Camerlengo poisoned Pontifex. To become the chosen successor he organized the theft of antimatter and abduction of cardinals, as well as the rescue of Rome from outburst. He sheltered himself beneath the name of illuminati society, though this society hadn??™t existed for long time.
It was also found out that the child of the Patriarch of Rome was conceived saintly by means of in vitro fertilization. This child was a camerlengo himself. In the gush of regret the latter commits self-immolation on the crowded square of Saint Peter.
